When we were installing Lloyd Johnson: The Modern Outfitter Lloyd relished all of the details and finishing touches to the clothes, accessories, and ephemera but he said that the show would not be complete until he had placed the guitars on the reconstructed Johnsons shopfront.

Hardly any wonder that the guitars were such an important part of the installation; the influence of music culture runs throughout Lloyd’s design work and the love and respect for music was returned because Lloyd’s clothes were the favourites of musicians including David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Keith Richards, George Michael, The Clash, Kid Creole, Tom Waits, Jerry Lee Lewis, Siouxsie Sioux – the list is endless
Lloyd has selected a soundtrack for The Modern Outfitter which reflects the guiding relationship between sounds and vision. Some tracks were recorded by customers (Madness, The Specials, Johnny Thunders, the Rolling Stones, Tim Curry…), others go back to the roots of rock & roll, Johnson’s formative years as a teen style Modernist in the 50s and his love of early 60s, pre-Beatles instrumentals. We have put the full Modern Outfitter Tracklist on the CHELSEA space website so you can Access It Here
Lloyd says that he will be in CHELSEA space every Wednesday throughout the exhibition from 11am-5pm and adds “sitting there listening to all my favourite music is a no brainer…looking at those two beautiful guitars and fantasizing that I can play all the tracks playing…I’m just a big kid!” The guitars are kindly on loan from Rick at New Kings Road Vintage Guitar Emporium
