Derek Boshier, who is giving a talk as part of our CHELSEA programme of public events, designed the cover for David Bowie’s 1979 album Lodger in collaboration with Bowie and the photographer Brian Duffy.
A David Bowie wallpaper design was loaned to CHELSEA space for the exhibition Ideal Home by pop culture commentator Paul Gorman who coincidently will be in conversation with Derek Boshier for the CHELSEA programme event.
Keith Richards bought clothes designed by Lloyd Johnson who is the subject of the next exhibition at CHELSEA space Lloyd Johnson: The Modern Outfitter which opens on 24th January.
Other Johnsons habitués included Billy Idol who came to fame with the band Generation X whose record covers were featured at CHELSEA space in an exhibition about artist/ designer Barney Bubbles curated by Paul Gorman.
Billy Idol’s fellow Generation X member, Tony James, who went on to form Sigue Sigue Sputnik, is part of the band Carbon Silicon with his old friend former Clash, Big Audio Dynamite and Gorillaz guitarist Mick Jones who was the subject of the CHELSEA space show Mick Jones’ Rock & Roll Public Library. Tony James and Mick Jones are shown here at CHELSEA space with Glen Matlock from the Sex Pistols who also shopped at Johnsons.
The Clash line up also included the legendary Joe Strummer who is seen here wearing a similar Japanese inspired Johnsons shirt to the one worn by Billy Idol.
